What a Summer!

As summer comes to an end, it is fun to look back on the good times we enjoyed. In July, we celebrated Bethesda’s 50th Anniversary with our first annual Fourth of July Party. We devoted the entire day to old-fashioned fun starting with donuts and coffee in the morning, while we enjoyed old country classics with one of our beloved performers, Shirley Johnson. For lunch, many families joined us for our free back yard barbecue. Corn on the cob was a special treat. We also enjoyed delicious homemade cupcakes donated by Barb Stone. (Thanks Barb!) It was nice to see entire families gathered around the tables. We were fortunate to have special guests, Lyle Arent who is on our Board of Directors and his father-in-law, Bernie Correll, as they provided a presentation about the great history of Bethesda. The ice-cream social in the afternoon was even more special with singer Jim Anderson’s patriotic tunes. For supper, we enjoyed more barbecue followed by an amazing accordion performance with Larry Koncel. At dusk, we were treated to a fireworks display by our administrator, Shannon Ahlman. One Resident said it was just like the old time community celebrations popular in most small rural towns.

The Residents have also enjoyed many other activities including sight seeing, van rides, an Antiques Road Show put on by the Antiques and Castaways store owners, and performances by Nashville Recording Artist, Mel Berg and the Roe Family Band. The Resident gardeners enjoyed their home-grown fried eggplant and cake made from beets. We also grew fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, onions and even kohlrabi!

Now that summer is behind us, we can’t wait for the joys of the Holiday season!
